Twin Screw Gassing System
Terco’s Twin Screw Gassing System Provides Efficiencies in Barrier Packaging

With the prominent trend in the aerosol industry in regards to the use of barrier-type packaging, Terco Inc. has developed a number of machinery bases and stations to meet the particular processing needs that this type of aerosol production requires.

One major area in which the barrier package has grown over the recent past is in the processed foods sector with the ‘piston can’ type container. This container contains a piston type barrier that separates the dispensed product from the propellant source. Unlike traditional thru-the-valve propellant filling, these containers require the charging of the propellant through an orifice in the bottom dome of the container.

Terco’s Twin Screw Gassing System has been developed to meet the requirements of this type of packaging while offering flexibility and operating efficiencies.  Capable of producing over 100 cans per minute, the Twin Screw Gassing System can be configured with stainless steel construction to meet the requirements of a wash down environment. The system is fed by a single conveyor from the filling area and features all pneumatic operation.

To meet the needs of various barrier package gassing methods, Terco offers a number of stations to complete the Twin Screw Gassing System. These stations include:

  • Grommet Chargers which secure pre-placed loose grommets into the gassing orifice at the end of the gassing cycle.
  • Umbrella Chargers for containers fitted with gassing umbrella valves in the lower dome.
  • Plug-Piercing Chargers for containers supplied with firmly positioned rubber plugs.
  • Plug-Placing Chargers for containers which require the placement and securing of  pre-molded plugs at the end of the gassing cycle
  • And, Piston Pluggers which make the orifice plug online from a bulk reel of rubber rope during the gassing process, and then position and secure the plug at the end of the gassing cycle.

All of the charging stations can be configured to work with volumetric or time based propellant filling methods. They are capable of running liquefied and compressed gases as a standard.

To meet safety concerns, Terco also offers optional enclosure and guarding packages. The enclosures are fully interlocked into the machines drive logic, while the lower stainless panels can be easily removed for maintenance issues.  The bases can also be configured as single indexing units initially, then upgraded in the future to double indexing when higher production speeds are needed.  Available upgrade options include PLC control systems, touch screen user interfacing, and process monitoring to allow for a custom fit solution.

Since 1965 Terco, Inc. has been providing solution-based aerosol filling equipment to the industry.  Today, Terco continues to lead the industry with offerings from simple hand powered filling equipment to fully PLC controlled lines.

With customers in over 45 countries around the world the Bloomingdale, Il (USA) company has developed a reputation for providing efficient and durable processing equipment flexible enough to meet the demands of consumer marketing. Their modular design philosophy allows for standard stations to be configured into a custom-fit solution to meet individual filling needs for both now and in the future.

Suited to meet the individual needs, Terco works hand-in-hand with each customer to develop a system to meet the requirements of both today and tomorrow.

According to the company, “ … Our dedication to the aerosol packager is to work together in partnership to develop the best solution for their needs. A system capable of meeting today’s demands yet flexible for the future.”
